One highly sought after Antique Bicycle is the high wheeled bicycle, manufactured after the boneshaker in the 1870s. The front wheel, or tire, was much larger than the back wheel. This design allowed for faster speeds than previously designer bikes. One thing about the large wheel was that it could be no taller than double the length of the rider’s inner leg length, or the rider could not reach to pedal.
Eugene Meyer, a French man, is credited with designing the antique high wheeled bicycle. Meyer is responsible for the invention of the wire spoke tension wheel, which he created in 1869. Meyer manufactured a version of the high wheeled bike until the 1880s. While James Starley, who added the tangent spokes on these tall bikes, also receives credit for the antique bike. Meyer is credited by the ICHC.
