Vintage Columbia Bicycles originated from the Pope Manufacturing Company founded in Boston, Massachusetts in 1877. The name of the founder was Colonel Albert A. Pope. Colonel Pope started importing bicycles from Europe in 1878. In March of that year Colonel Pope started to market the sale of Bicycles in Boston by posting a bicycle sale sign up.
In 1878 Colonel Pope became interested in making his own bicycles and decided to approach the Weed Sewing Machine Company in Hartford, Connecticut with his ideas. The Weed Sewing Machine Company became interested in Colonel Pope's ideas to manufacture bicycles, and that year produced the first line of bicycles. However, after the company underwent many times of filing for bankruptcy and company name changes, the company arrives at the name Columbia Manufacturing Company in the 1961.Despite all misfortunes, over the years the owners of the company are original decedents of the Pope Manufacturing Company.
